The 2019 Solheim Cup wrapped up to much fanfare on September 15. Although the U.S. team seemed primed for a win, the European team scooped the cup with a last-minute one-point lead.
Led by Captain Catriona Matthew, the European team included Carlota Ciganda, Anne Van Dam, Caroline Hedwall, Charley Hull, Georgia Hall, Azahara Munoz, Caroline Masson, Anna Nordqvist, Celine Boutier, Jodi Eward Shadoff, Bronte Law, and Suzann Petersen.
The U.S. team, headed by Captain Juli Inkster, included Lexi Thomspon, sisters Nelly and Jessica Korda, Danielle Kang, Lizette Salas, Megan Khang, Marina Alex, Brittany Altomare, Angel Yin, Annie Park, Ally McDonald, and Morgan Pressel.
The stage was set at the beautiful Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland. In early matches, the U.S. held onto a meager lead, trading 1UPs back and forth with Europe. By the 18th green, the teams were tied up with 13 ½ points each. U.S. player Marina Alex put up a respectable performance, but European Suzann Pettersen sealed the deal with an impeccable final putt.
“Pettersen’s team-mates flood the green with blue, and Gleneagles erupts in celebration!” writes The Guardian’s Scott Murray. “How on earth did Europe salvage that! What a comeback, right at the death! And it’s the captain’s pick Suzann Pettersen with the winning putt. The last putt, in the last match, on the last green! The greatest Solheim Cup win ever? Pretty much, yes!”
